Highlight Technologies is looking for a Reference Librarian to support the National Defense University at Fort McNair in Washington, D.C. The National Defense University (NDU) is a dynamic and collaborative work environment whose mission is to develop joint warfighters and other national security leaders through rigorous academics, research and engagement to serve the common defense. As the Reference Librarian you will assist in educating, developing and inspiring current and future international and US Government personnel in leadership, strategy and the application of military power to inform national strategy and global operations.


You will provide support to NDU’s academic enterprise library and NDU library reference and instruction programs. You will also provide reference and research assistance in assigned areas; conduct research and analysis support on topics of historical, current and future concern to the U.S. national security community; provide regular reference desk coverage during normal library hours; present established focused research classes and brown-bag sessions, individually and team-taught; adapt presentations, including content, examples, and methods, to needs of specific audiences; deliver orientation briefings and tours to new students, effectively communicating information about the library’s resources and services; and support the development of proactive web content that supports the curricular, research and scholarship needs of the University.


This position is currently remote, but will eventually transition to on-site at Fort McNair.


  • Contribute to all aspects of library operations, including maintenance of the integrated library system (ILS), cataloging and processing materials, interlibrary loan operations, and collection development.
  • Support SirsiDynix Symphony ILS.
  • Maintain LibGuides.
  • Perform copy cataloging using recognized standards. Some original cataloging also required.
  • Respond to reference questions both virtually and at the reference desk using a wide variety of databases.
  • Manage collection development and maintenance.
  • Help maintain electronic resources and Library supported web sites.
  • Train clients and staff on effective search techniques for library e-resources.
  • Assist with projects as needed, including software implementation, needs assessments, database launches, strategic planning exercises, marketing and special events.
  • Stay abreast of the information needs and trends within the areas of foreign assistance and economic development, as well as trends in library and information science and related technology.
  • Additional job responsibilities will be assigned as necessary.


  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Public Trust eligibility.
  • Master of Library Science degree from an ALA‑accredited library science program.
  • Five (5) years of experience, preferably in an Academic or Special Library setting.
  • Experience with SirsiDynix Symphony ILS.
  • Experience with original and copy cataloging, and authority control.
  • Experience with MARC, LC Subject Headings, LC Classification Schedules, and AACR2.
  • Experience using the OCLC system and cataloging subsystem.
  • Experience with Springshare Suite, particularly LibGuides, LibAnswers and LibChat.
  • Knowledge of information technologies, including internet and online database searching, and library systems software.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.
  • Strong attention to detail. Excellent ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to creatively troubleshoot and solve problems.
  • Strong public/customer service orientation.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others to achieve project goals.
